Prepare for the immigrant visa interview

Use the appointment letter and the assigned post’s instructions to organize the last stage of preparation.

The useful distinctionYour appointment instructions come first; a general guide helps you organize them.

Work from the actual appointment

For a case processed through NVC, the Department of State describes an appointment notification followed by pre-interview steps. Read the entire message and verify the assigned embassy or consulate, the applicants covered and the date and time. Keep the notification with the case records and check the post’s current local instructions.

Do not assume another family’s account describes your appointment. Security arrangements, courier registration and other practical requirements can differ. Make a short list of tasks from the actual instructions, with an owner and a planned completion date.

Arrange the correct medical examination

The immigrant visa medical examination must be performed by an embassy-approved panel physician under the post’s instructions. An ordinary appointment with a family doctor is not a substitute. Use the official provider information rather than an advertisement that resembles a government service.

Follow the instructions for results. If the panel physician provides a sealed envelope to take to the interview, do not open it. Ask the provider or post about the required handling rather than making a copy by breaking the seal. Keep medical details private.

Recheck the documents

The State Department says immigrant visa applicants must bring specified materials, including the original or certified-copy civil documents submitted to NVC. Check the full appointment and post-specific list, including any updates or validity requirements, instead of assuming uploaded scans are sufficient.

Review each applicant’s file separately. Match the names and identifying details to the appointment. For a child, do not assume the adult’s documents substitute for the child’s requirements. Use our civil-document inventory method to identify what is ready, what needs replacing and what remains uncertain.

Prepare for an accurate conversation

Review your own application and supporting records so you can answer accurately. If a fact has changed or you discover an error, identify it and follow the appropriate instructions or seek advice. Rehearsing a fabricated story creates problems; clear, truthful information is the objective.

An interview is not a guarantee that a visa will be issued that day. The case may require further action or processing. Keep travel commitments flexible and follow the written outcome instructions. Our official contact directory helps distinguish agency channels if you need to clarify the next step.
